Overview of Interjection

What is Interjection?

Interjection - a word which expresses some sudden feeling or emotion.

For example: wow / ouch / bravo / hurry / well done / good gracious / for shame / ah me

They are not grammatically related to the other words in a sentence.

Interjections may express:

  • Joy

    E.g. Hurrah! We have cleared prelims.

  • Grief

    E.g. Alas! We have to leave this town.

  • Surprise

    E.g. What a shot!
    Oh! I was rattled by the sound.

  • Approval

    E.g. Bravo! Nice rebuttal.

  • Disapproval

    E.g. Hush! Don’t make a noise.

  • Greeting

    E.g. Hello! You are late.
